Shaping Futures Foundation matches corporate donations to tertiary institutions to assist worthy students in achieving graduation

THE SHAPING FUTURES FOUNDATION

The Shaping Futures Foundation was set up in direct response to the challenges facing tertiary education in South Africa. In particular, the implications to graduates with financial and funding issues.

In accordance with current BEE requirements for companies and corporations today, there is an opportunity to bridge these demands with the funding hole in education.

Shaping Futures Foundation matches corporate donations to tertiary institutions to assist worthy students in achieving graduation.

Every moment counts

Since its founding in August 2017, the Shaping Futures Foundation has already raised in excess of R20m and provided financial assistance to over 300 students, involved in the Information Technology, Tourism and other disciplines.

It also currently administers a school feeding scheme providing daily meals to 2,800 underprivileged learners.

Who We Are

The Shaping Futures Foundation Board Members

Unable to pay for food, we could not see how we would be able to pay my fees for 2018 and I was left looking for jobs to work part time, in order to pay it off. The assistance of this bursary will so gravely assist me with being able to pay full attention to my studies, without the constant worry, stress and anxiety of how my fees will be paid, in order for me to continue my studies and eventually graduate. Being at UCT is one of the greatest achievements of my life and I thus strive my hardest to maintain my good grades and continue to be able to have an opportunity to study at this wonderful institution.

Renee, UCT

I am truly honoured to be one of the recipients of The Shaping Future Foundation bursary. Thanks to your support I will be the first in my family to possibly
acquire a tertiary education. Thank you for investing in my dream of reaching my primary goal of achieving a degree in computer science and computer engineering. This is only the first step but such a crucial and fundamental one. I am extremely grateful as your financial assistance does, to a large degree, alleviate a massive task of funding my studies at such a prestigious institution like UCT. Your tremendous generosity does not go unrecognised and I will continue to work at my best to ensure I do not disappoint you.

Zainub, UCT

I just wanted to thank you wholeheartedly for extending a helping hand when I needed it the most. Your contribution to my academic studies has been a great blessing. I am extremely honored to be this year’s recipient of the award. I am a first year student studying Information Technology at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology. I assure you that I will not disappoint the Shaping Futures Foundation and I will pass to the best of my ability as I am passionate about my course.

Khanye, CPUT

Now that I am at University I really feel privileged to have the opportunity to study further as I realise many people don’t get the chance. I am studying for
a BSc with a double major in Computer Science and Mathematics and I am happy to say I have achieved all distinctions in my first year. My parents cannot fully cover my university costs as my father was retrenched in December 2016 and this created an extreme setback in our financial situation. This funding will help to greatly reduce the financial strain at home.

Sachin, UCT

HOW WE HELP

The revised BEE Codes have focused heavily on the human resource elements within the scorecard and have made skills development a priority element.

As a priority element, companies that fail to achieve at least 40% of the skills development points on offer will automatically be downgraded a level.

The target spend is 6% of a company’s annual payroll if your turnover is over R50 million per annum, and 3% of your payroll is your annual turnover is between R10 million and R50 million per annum.

Spend is also now measured in line with the country’s demographic profile, so it is vital that this spend is correctly allocated.

Despite having the academic ability to pass their relevant degree, the mere fact that students can’t afford the fees means that they are denied graduation.

Many of these students are the first in their families to attend universities.

With government battling to narrow this funding shortfall, it is a national imperative for these students to graduate and join the workforce.

Corporates can assist in narrowing this divide and at the same time gain recognition on their BEE scorecard.

  • The reach of a black graduate is material. Often this will be the first graduate from that family. The ability for the graduating student to find meaningful employment, and with it an improved earnings potential, improves not just their life but potentially those of their family as well.
  • Deserving students should be able to graduate and not fall victim to a lack of funding blocking their progression. By matching corporate skills development contributions to these graduates, it is a win-win for both parties.
  • This creates a knock-on effect meaning the assistance of corporate donors can play a small, but meaningful part in improving the lives of all South Africans.
  • The Shaping Futures Foundation undertakes to address the challenge of tertiary education funding in South Africa.
  • This is achieved by engaging with corporates and assisting them to maximise their BEE requirements whilst, at the same time, matching these donations to worthy recipients.
  • Donations to the Shaping Futures Foundation qualify as skills development expenditure.
  • The Shaping Futures Foundation will ensure this spend is allocated efficiently and in accordance with the country’s demographic profile.
  • Any spend that the corporate has already incurred is taken into account.
  • As a registered PBO, we can issue a s18(A) certificate to ensure tax efficiency.
  • Our foundation has established relationships with a number of tertiary institutions. This allows a synergy between spend and faculties or institutions that are of particular interest to the company.
  • This could lead to hiring opportunities for the donor companies which will further enhance their demographic profile and improve their employment equity score.
  • In addition, companies who hire graduates may qualify for up to five bonus points in the skills
    development element.
